It’s just evidence.

BONES: Season Five

The Goop on the Girl

So… BONES just treats us right at Christmas time, doesn’t it? I love watching these episodes, even when the weather is so nice ( and in Ohio, it is SO NICE!) But Christmasy BONES puts me in a great mood.

I will admit that I wasn’t as spoiler free as I should have been about this episode. I watched a couple of the promo vids, and I shouldn’t have, as they ended up being pretty much ALL of the Zooey Deschanel scenes. But for the most part, I love this episode.

Do you?

THE CASE:

The episode starts with a Santa robbing a bank; he has a bomb strapped to his chest. Once he gets outside with the money, Booth is in the area and hears of the robbery. He gets to the scene just in time to hold the Santa at gunpoint.  It seemed to me that the Santa wasn’t interested in killing himself, and the bomb went off accidentally, leaving Santa (later identified as Holden Chevaleer) dead, and some witnesses covered in, well…goop. The prime witnesses are a cab driver, Booth, and a woman, Georgia Hartmeyer. She also becomes a suspect. Other suspects include a radio host, Owen Thiel, who angrily spouts out anti-materialistic radio waves, and Malaki Wallace, a bomb making expert.

I thought it was pretty creative that Holden was a patsy, forced to wear the Santa costume for the crime. And the scene with his mother in Booth’s office was heartbreaking. One of the most prevalent themes of BONES is ‘redemption’, and this episode featured that as Owen’s story. I liked his ‘confession’ at the end of the episode, and the entire team standing at the gravesite on Christmas morning felt very season one in a heartcrushingly good way.

Were you surprised that Georgia and the cab driver were in on it together?

THE SQUINTS:

You know how I feel about Daisy and Sweets when he’s with Daisy, so in the interest of Christmas spirit, I’ll just leave it at that. What I find so intriguing is the idea that Sweets is at Brennan’s Christmas dinner “For Agent Booth”. So…I wonder if Brennan invited him, saying it would be meaningful to Booth, or if Booth invited him (basically as a co-host).

Haha! Hodgins’ and Angela’s reactions to Booth in the lab. Booth is highly evolved!

Angela and Hodgins may have tried to sneak a moment past me, but…I don’t know. I’m still not convinced that they are meant to be together. What was with Hodgins quoting Booth’s “There’s more than one kind of family.” Um, hello! True statement, though. I liked the moment where Angela and Cam were talking to Hodgins when he had on his fake bomb prototype. And I really enjoyed that Cam’s part in the episode included her relationship with Michelle. I also LOVE the look on her face when she walks in on B&B in the evidence room.

BOOTH & BRENNAN:

We have discussed before that when this is all said and done, Brennan will be the one who will basically ‘save’ Booth. I don’t mean to be dramatic, but what is interesting to me is that for all of Brennan’s ‘angst’ (for lack of a better word) at the beginning of this series, she really has little at this point. While she might have some tension in her extended family life, it’s not a secret that Max cares a lot about her. She has a very fulfilling job and very good friends. Booth on the other hand is now the ‘lonely’ one, I guess. I always feel bad for him when Rebecca takes Parker away from him at Christmas. It’s kind of an overdone plot at this point, but in the interest of…

…I’ll let it slide. Ha. I’m so generous around the holidays.

Honestly…I don’t care what anyone says. Our favorite girl Brennan is hooked on our man, Booth.

That’s not to say he’s not hooked on her, too. I mean…only in his dreams, right?

Very smart of the writers to once again give us this kind of scene and have it be all about ‘just evidence’. Ha!

But what is nice is that beyond all of that stuff is a good case and B&B do a great job with it.

I had also forgotten about the scene where B&B have drinks together and talk about family. That is actually a really, really great scene with some bickering and Booth kind of having a double standard (telling Brennan that she should hang out with Margaret but saying that Jared is too annoying). What is fun is that Brennan sees right through him (even though she is slightly hurt by him saying she has a mania for logic).

But I like that Brennan gets to brag a bit after Margaret uses Ben Franklin to dis Booth’s compliment of her (and Brennan’s) beauty.

I also love that Brennan tells Margaret that Booth is pleasing to look at.

I know some people were slightly disappointed at the lack of a major B&B moment at the end of this episode, and I and my shipper heart agree somewhat. It would have been nice to see a nod to some mistletoe or a private conversation, that kind of thing.

But I also really, really have a lot of respect for this show and they way they brought about the ‘family’ type of feeling. It’s not ALL about Booth and Brennan (allegedly, haha). Having said that…I really love the part in the SUV when Brennan is very honest with Booth about how she feels about Holden’s mother having to bury him alone. Booth is kind of like the sieve between Brennan & her emotions and the rest of the world. Sieve, filter, human sounding board, whatever. I so love her honesty with him. It’s not always about him, but she trusts him to see a part of her that she doesn’t always reveal to others. So yes, while this episode was revealing as far as Booth’s body is  concerned…

(sorry, I couldn’t resist one more. Oh, and $10 says that Booth doesn’t know what she’s talking about. All he hears is ‘perfect’ and he grins. Cocky!)

…anyways…as revealing as it is in that way, it’s also revealing of Brennan’s inner thoughts and feelings toward family and life in general.

I love that.

I love that Booth asks her if she wants to go to the funeral, and she just simply says “Yes. Then she won’t be alone.”

Beautiful, beautiful. Inside and out.  I’m not the only one who thinks so, either.

There is a reason I love this show. Well, there are a lot of reasons. But one of them is this exact type of thing.

I think there are a lot of reasons why each one of us came around to BONES, but if I had to guess why we all stick around, it’s because of relationships.

One of my favorite parts is when Angela asks Hodgins if they should feel like big giant losers because they aren’t spending Christmas with family. I’m not saying that I want to spend MY Christmas with you all every year, and I am not saying I don’t like my family. I’m just saying that there is something very, very, very, very special about BONESlove all over the globe. Do me a favor (as a belated Christmas gift, how about!) and let me know what country you are from. I just think it’s so cool that people love BONES all over the world.

As far as the end, I like that Margaret tries to toss Brennan some love advice re: Booth. Yes, Brennan! Venture some bait!

And okay, okay…there are other reasons I love this show. Like this…
